Last month, state police entered a private residence with guns drawn. Were they looking for a fugitive from justice? A murderer? A sexual predator? No. They were looking for an illegal poker game.
Yes, you read that right.
The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) broke into a 73 year old woman’s home to raid a friendly neighborhood poker game. $20.00 to enter the game, winner takes all. SLED confiscated the money on the table, the money in pockets, wallets and purses. They confiscated the cards and card tables. Well, I feel so much safer now that these evil criminals are off our streets.
In SC, it is illegal to play any game that involves dice or cards. This means that not only are poker and blackjack illegal, but also monopoly, trivial pursuit and solitaire. When I play Go Fish with the Lil GeeCheeGirl, I am breaking the law. Of course, it is not illegal to go to the corner store and buy a ticket for the SC Education Lottery. That is government sanctioned gambling.
Here in the south we take pride in our past – good and bad. But there comes a time when archaic laws need to be updated or just plain thrown out.
